I have been constructively busy in the last few days checking the proof of THE LAST BALCONY (plus two novellas THE APOCRYPHAN and YESTERFANG) – my definitive book collection to be published in 2012 by The InkerMen Press. I am particularly excited about this and, while re-reading the various fictions, they came up completely fresh. I was immodestly impressed but I’m not sure how divorced a writer can be from past work … but ‘The Intentional Fallacy’ applies?

Some stories were previously published in print.
SD Tullis and Slawek Wielhorski originally helped me choose some of the above contents list.
It was originally accepted by Ex Occidente Press nearly two years ago but I withdrew it from them in September 2010 because they had then put a finite time on their publishing company’s life and there had already been some missed deadlines about the timing of LAST BALCONY…and I thought their ethos had changed and I wanted them to have more scope in publishing their style of books (which I thought Last Balcony now didn’t fit).
I see LB as my definitive collection.

‘Weirdmonger’ (Prime Books 2003) – that doesn’t duplicate anything in LB – is now irretrievably out of print.

I shall treat offers of publication for LB, if any, on their merits. Thanks for your interest.

Ex Occidente Press seems now to be changing its business plan and will be continuing beyond April 2011. This is good news for lovers of the books themselves.

‘The Last Balcony’ book of my stories and two novellas (Yesterfang and The Apocryfan) is not proceeding with Ex Occidente Press. Please see HERE for details of circumstances. It is intended to be my definitive collection.

This remains a big disappointment to me.

However, a novella was recently published by The InkerMen Press: ‘Weirdtongue‘: A Glistenberry Romance: A Visit To The Narrative Hospital.’

And ‘Nemonymous Night’ - a novel – has recently been accepted by Chômu Press for publication in 2011.

While originally chewing over this matter, I happened to re-read HERE my retro-eponymous short prose piece ‘THE LAST BALCONY’ – written in 2009 after the proposed collection with Ex Occidente Press had been agreed and its overall title had been created – and it now seems obliquely resonant or strangely prophetic.

And, having now reviewed The Defeat of Grief’ by John Howard HERE, I feel I am becoming closer to what the ‘Last Balcony’ situation with Ex Occidente was all about.

The Last Balcony’s Last Balcony

Can you review yourself?

Well, as a result of the ethos and style imposed by the new ritual of Real-Time Reviewing that I have been carrying out for a year or so now – and of the genuine suggestions or challenges to me by other people and by various synchronicities to do so – I have tried this potentially self-indulgent process at least twice with the ‘Weirdmonger‘ and ‘Cern Zoo‘ books. The first reviewing myself as the author in an independently published book and the second as editor/publisher of other writers’ work.

Now, I’m intending to real-time review ‘The Last Balcony’ collection due to be published shortly by Ex Occidente Press. This will indeed be the definitive and probably final DFL collection. And I’ve now thought that real-time reviewing should attempt the seemingly impossible, i.e. pre-birth, in-existence and post-death. I have started by writing the beginning of the review below – even before the book exists - as a tentative retrocausal appraisal in tune with the envisaged book as a thing-already-in-itself:

These stories straddle many traditions without falling into any of them. One moment a disease of the beard the next a drifty fairy tale followed by a text that actually attacks you physically, the words’ letters hooked upon the skin like burrs. Without overstating the case, there is a sort of miracle in this book working towards jumping from the last balcony in mimicry of DF Lewis as drogulus or nemo. Baffles and Fables. Veils and Piques. A stuttering nightmare in smooth real-time narrative…or vice versa.

A month or two ago, it suddenly occurred to me, out of nowhere, that the title, ’The Last Balcony’, may have been strangely pre-determined in some unpredictable or retrocausal way.

At apparent face value, then, I have long been intrigued (without a full understanding of its historical context) by the TV pictures of Ceausescu’s last appearance on a balcony, amid boos and jeers from the crowds below that shocked him into the state of a dysfunctional puppet. He was, I recall, hustled away, never to be seen in public again.
